Manchester United failed to hit the ground running and were swept aside by newly promoted Hull City in their Premier League opener.

Two set-piece goals early in the first half proved decisive, with the Red Devils failing to break down a resolute Tigers backline. The performance of the midfield and certain attackers left a lot to be desired at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.

After the game, Luke Shaw, who was at fault for the second goal, claimed the Red Devils should have prepared better, especially with regard to set-piece defending.

“I think we have to do, as a whole team, much better,” the Englishman told Viaplay. “I think even leading up the game, we need to prepare better on what their strengths are and of course that’s set-plays.”

Set-piece defending cost United

Such direct words almost imply that the head coach and his staff should have prepared the team better. If that is indeed the case, Michael Carrick will not be too pleased.

The left-back assured fans that the squad will not rest until they put their season back on track, starting next week.

He also promised the Old Trafford faithful that this season would be a successful one and that one game does not define the group’s qualities.

“I think we had the exact same hope (as the fans). We have the exact same feeling, even now after the game. It will be a very good season from us, I’m sure of it. We’ll be up there.

“Of course, this is a little blip. It’s not obviously nice to happen at the start of the season when our expectations are high and we should be starting the season strong, showing everyone we’re here this season.

“Not meant to be. But one game won’t define us. We’ll regroup, we’ll go again and, like I said, I promise it’ll be a good season from us.”

Up next is another newly promoted side in Ipswich Town, who enjoyed a fantastic start to their campaign, beating Sunderland 2-1 in their opener.

It will be far from a walk in the park for the 20-time English league champions, but at Old Trafford, with the Stretford End cheering them on, hopefully, Michael Carrick’s men can deliver.
