Bayern Munich moved nine points clear of Bayer Leverkusen at the top of Bundesliga with a 1-1 draw away to Union Berlin, but were left to rue missed chances as Leroy Sané’s goal 15 minutes from time was cancelled out by Benedict Hollerbach with five minutes.

Bayern Munich enjoyed 80% possession over the 90 minutes and dominated open play with 18 shots but managed only four on target.

In the end, they came outdone by an outstanding rearguard action, led by Union Captain, Christopher Trimmel.

In the post-match press conference, Kompany was happy with the team’s overall performance but frustrated by missed opportunities.

A Game of Two Stories

“First of all, congratulations to my colleague, his team and Union Berlin. It’s a game of two stories, theres the performance and the result. We are disappointed with the result, that’s very simple but it was not a bad performance away from home. I’ve been in football long enough to know it wasn’t a bad performance. We were patient. We took away the danger for a long time, they had a moment, which they scored but we did well. We were good in large parts.”

Seeking Perfection

“The danger was increasing, we were becoming more precise. I am very happy with the performance and the result in a very tough away game. Sometimes it’s not about not being able to score, sometimes it’s about the defence. Today, they were great. We need to take our chances and we were getting more and more dangerous as the game went on. But they did very well. In the end, credit to the opponent.”

A lot of Positives

“So today, it wasn’t bad, in these moments, we needed to convert when we were feeling dangerous. It’s always a difficult scoreline, 1-0, especially here and we got punished. They fought, had one moment and took it to their advantage. But there is a lot to be happy about. We can’t always, always, always be perfect.”

Something Missing

“As I said, it wasn’t a bad performance but today, there was something missing in the last pass. It was rhe same with the corners. Nevertheless, we still created chances and we should have won the game. When everything’s not perfect, sometimes you have to take the result.”

Evidently, there is a lot for Kompany to ponder on as he makes the long journey south to Munich but with just 8 games remaining of the season, Bayern Munich are within touching distance of another Bundesliga title.
