Sheffield United welcome Wrexham to Bramall Lane this Saturday afternoon in what promises to be an intriguing encounter.
The Blades come into this fixture searching for greater consistency. A resilient 1-1 draw with ten men away at Birmingham City last weekend followed a narrow 2-1 defeat on the road at Norwich City. On home soil, however, Sheffield United have looked far more assured, winning seven of their last 12 matches at Bramall Lane and feeding off the energy of the S2 crowd.
Wrexham, meanwhile, continue to embrace life in the Championship following their remarkable rise through the divisions. Under the guidance of Phil Parkinson, there has been sustained momentum around the club, and they have carried that belief into this campaign. Currently sitting seventh and level on points with sixth-placed Southampton, they are firmly in the play-off conversation. While their away form has been inconsistent, they have proven they can compete with established sides at this level.
In terms of team news, United still have a few concerns. Sam McCallum is expected to miss out, while Tom Davies made a surprise return to the bench last weekend and will continue to be assessed. Kalvin Phillips is also a doubt. There is a boost, however, with Gustavo Hamer available again and pushing for an immediate return to the starting XI after serving a two-match suspension.
For Wrexham, availability looks largely positive, though they will be without former Blades striker Kieffer Moore, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury. Midfielder Ben Sheaf is also out with an MCL issue. Despite those absences, Wrexham retain depth and attacking options capable of troubling United.
Blades boss Chris Wilder has made it clear what will be required from his side as they approach the final game before the international break. United were beaten in Wales on Boxing Day, and Wilder has stressed the importance of avoiding a repeat performance.
Reflecting on that defeat, Wilder said his side were “out-fought and out-run,” something he deemed unacceptable.
Wilder spoke in his pre-match press conference: “At times this can happen to the best of teams, but it can’t happen continuously and consistently, which it hasn’t, and that’s the reason that our form over the last 20-odd games has been pretty consistent and right up there. It’ll have to be consistent on Saturday afternoon because if we don’t meet the fight head-on and we don’t compete physically, then this becomes a really difficult game. It’s going to be a difficult game, what it is, but we understand the challenges ahead of us.”
He also spoke warmly about his long-standing relationship with Phil Parkinson, acknowledging the impressive job Wrexham’s staff have done both on and off the pitch.
“I’ve known Phil [Parkinson] a long time, as he said in his press conference. We go back a long time, we’ve got history on the pitch, we’ve got history off the pitch as well, in terms of our backgrounds and where we started our footballing career. Phil, from his point of view, has assembled a really good team and to win consistently is all credit to him and Steve Parkin and the coaching staff in getting it right off the pitch as well.”
Wilder also addressed the absence of Moore, admitting the striker’s injury is a boost for United. He praised the Welsh international’s qualities, describing him as a player who provided leadership, a traditional number nine presence, and important goals during his time at Bramall Lane.
“He’s been instrumental to their progression this year. I know he didn’t leave on great terms and the club but I’ve got to say I thought he was really good for us. He have us that leadership quality, that number nine profile, and scored important goals. I’m a Kieffer Moore fan so for him not to be playing is good but they’ve got other players and they’ve bought well.”
With Sheffield United ten points behind the play-off places and Wrexham knocking on the door, Saturday afternoon is set to be a high stakes contest at Bramall Lane.
