Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner insists that winning the Adobe Women’s FA Cup is not the only remaining target for his side this season.

The Red Devils have endured a tough campaign. Manchester United have been unable to seriously challenge for the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup while they are almost certain to finish outside of the top three in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

The Adobe Women’s FA Cup is the only remaining piece of silverware on offer for Manchester United, however, head coach Skinner insists that his side have more targets in the remaining weeks of the campaign.

“Of course, it would be a success [to win the FA Cup], you’d be winning a trophy and that’s all we want to do for this young club,” Skinner said when speaking ahead of this evening’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup quarter-final tie at Brighton & Hove Albion.

“I must stress that we are being compared to the best season we’ve ever had in the history of our women’s teams. If you fall short, it will look like a failure but there’s a lot of growth that we’ve had this year, we’ve made a lot of adaptation and future planning going into the next seasons.

“From our perspective, we want to win things, so it would be success but also, we are not going to shy away from the fact that we want to win every game. The last league games that we have to play, we want to try and win them as well.”

Manchester United come up against a Brighton & Hove Albion side this evening that are still under the interim leadership of Mikey Harris. Skinner sees a Brighton & Hove Albion team that are growing their possession-based game.

He said “It’s different. We obviously faced them directly after Mel [Phillips] had left, so Mikey didn’t have a lot of time to implement [his game plan].

“I think it looks like a Brighton DNA. They value possession-based football highly, so they are going to try and manipulate us with the ball. We’ve got to be very clever in the way that we defend that and work hard because they’re good at it.

“Watching their play against Bristol City and also the Villa game, you can start to see them progress a little bit in how they want to play, so I think we are going to have to be resolute in our defending.

“I think the pitch will play a part, there’s not as much grass on it at this stage in the season. Both teams will have to adapt a little bit towards that.

“It’s going to be an exciting game and one that we are not taking lightly by any means.”

Manchester United’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup quarter-final tie at Brighton & Hove Albion kicks-off at 5.15pm this evening.
