Liverpool’s newest forward, Hugo Ekitike, made an electric first appearance at Anfield and declared his hunger to experience it again. In front of a buzzing home crowd, the Frenchman showcased glimpses of his potential in the second of Liverpool’s pre-season victories over Athletic Bilbao.
Arne Slot’s side, fresh from lifting the Premier League title last season, continued their momentum with two victories over the La Liga outfit. The Reds claimed a 4-1 win followed by a tightly contested 3-2 result, with Ekitike taking centre stage in the second clash.
The 22-year-old, signed from Eintracht Frankfurt last month, wasted no time in making an impression. During Monday’s fixture, he provided a clever assist for Mohamed Salah’s opener, immediately showing signs of a budding connection with the team’s attacking unit.
Speaking after the match, Ekitike said, “I enjoyed it a lot, it was such a good atmosphere for a first game for me. I feel proud and I just wish I will play so many games in this stadium because it is amazing.”

That desire to embed himself in Liverpool’s setup was clear. Despite only recently joining, Ekitike already appears focused on integrating himself into Slot’s high-energy system.
While the link-up with Salah was a standout moment, Ekitike was quick to highlight that he’s still adjusting to his new surroundings. Yet there’s no mistaking the early chemistry forming behind the scenes.
“I am here now for more than one week so I’m still trying to find connections with the others in the last passes and even before. I enjoy playing with them, outside of the pitch they are good guys also. So, I take pleasure to play with them,” he added.
It’s that sense of camaraderie that has been a trademark of successful Liverpool sides in the past. Slot appears to be nurturing something similar in his second season at the helm.
With the Community Shield looming, Ekitike remains grounded but optimistic. He knows there’s more to polish in his own game, yet he shares the collective ambition that defines this Liverpool squad.
“We have some little things to fix to get better. Even me with the ball, I knew I could do better today. But I really enjoy playing with them and I’m sure we’re going to make really good things this season.”
That intent was echoed when looking ahead to Sunday’s showdown at Wembley. “We have a group of competitors, we want to win everything. We’re going to give 100 per cent I’m sure. I’m sure about this. And me also, I’m going to give 100 per cent to win because I’m here to win.”
Slot’s Reds, powered by hunger and reinforced with fresh talent like Ekitike, are already making it clear they intend to build on last season’s triumphs. With Anfield behind them and players eager to deliver, Liverpool look primed for another fierce campaign.
