Victor Boniface has struggled to make the impact Werder Bremen had hoped for since joining the club on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, fueling speculation that his spell at the Weserstadion could be cut short.

The Nigerian striker missed Werder’s final two games of 2025 due to a knee injury, and the club’s managing director of professional football, Clemens Fritz, left his future open following Saturday's 0-0 draw with Augsburg.

“Victor is currently injured, and we are in communication with the Leverkusen doctors. For now, we want to give him a bit of rest. He will take a few days off, but then we’ll have to see how things develop,” Fritz told reporters on Saturday.

It remains unclear how serious Boniface’s knee injury is. Once that is clarified, discussions about his “sporting future” will follow.

“Then we will look together at how to proceed,” Fritz added.

“As of now, neither Victor has approached us, nor are there such considerations on Leverkusen’s side or ours. The important thing for now is that he gets fit again.”

Boniface has yet to score in 11 appearances for Werder this season.
