Werder Bremen have officially denied reports that Victor Boniface will officially be undergoing season-ending surgery. Over the break, reliable German footballing media sources such as Kicker and Sport Bild claimed that Werder, Boniface, and the Nigerian’s parent club Bayer Leverkusen all agreed that Boniface should get off the pitch and out of the limelight. Such sources reported that Boniface would do so via a surgical procedure on his knee.
In a statement issued on the club’s website today, the Hanseaten revealed that Boniface is in Innsbruck, Austria awaiting an appointment with a specialist on January 8th. It does remain certain that Boniface won’t be featuring for Werder anytime soon. The striker’s fitness issues and social media antics do still render him an unlikely candidate to return to head coach Horst Steffen’s good graces.
Werder remain on the hunt for additional attacking assistance during the current January transfer window in large part due to the fact that Boniface hasn’t scored a single goal for his loan club. Young Keke Topp (the only other natural forward in the Werder squad) has also not scored a Bundesliga goal this season and is being actively shopped to other clubs.
Werder definitely won’t be counting on Boniface’s return.
