Werder Bremen have opened talks with Southampton to sign Damion Downs on loan for the remainder of the 2025/26 season, according to a report from Bild.
After joining the Championship club from 1. FC Köln for €8m in July, Downs has failed to score for his new club, and would be open to a return to the Bundesliga. It comes as Bremen find themselves among the lowest goalscorers this season with just 18 goals in 15 Bundesliga games, better than only five teams.
Bremen’s interest in Downs comes with Keke Topp (21) yet to score in 390 league minutes this season, while Victor Boniface, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, is also yet to find the net. However, SVW are the only team interested in Downs, per Bild, who name Hamburg as another team showing an interest.
In a World Cup year, Downs is looking to boost his chances of featuring in this year’s tournament for the United States.
