Marcel Sabitzer scored on his debut as Borussia Dortmund hit six past TSV Schott Mainz and progressed into the second round of the DFB-Pokal.
Scorers: Gans 34âČ; Haller 22âČ, 35âČ, Brandt 24âČ, Sabitzer 57âČ, Malen 79âČ, Moukoko 85âČ.
SĂ©bastien Haller broke the deadlock to bag Dortmundâs first goal of the season, heading home from Julian Brandtâs cross before Brandt got on the scoresheet himself, getting on to the end of Donyell Malenâs low ball to the back post.
The hosts gave themselves hope of getting back into the game when Nils Gans pulled one back but Haller scrambled home to restore the two-goal advantage a minute later.
Sabitzer made it four midway through the second half, getting on to the rebound of Marco Reusâ effort before smashing low past Tim Bjarne Hansen.
Donyell Malen smashed home a fifth 11 minutes from time before Youssoufa Moukoko came off the bench to round off the scoring as Edin TerziÄâs side got their 2023/24 season up and running.
Dortmund kick off their Bundesliga campaign against Köln next Saturday.
Werder Bremen became the first Bundesliga team to be knocked out of the DFB-Pokal at the hands of third tier Viktoria Köln after a 94th-minute winner.
A stunning second- half comeback from the hosts inflicted a shock blow on Ole Wernerâs side, who did have defender Amos Pieper sent off in the 11th minute.
Marvin Ducksch had given Werder the lead just before half-time but David Philipp levelled late into the second period.
Niklas FĂŒllkrugâs penalty looked to put the game back into the path of the Bundesliga side but Philipp levelled with his second minute later.
Before Donny BogiÄeviÄ scored with one of the final kicks of the game to win the game for Viktoria Köln and cause the first shock of the DFB-Pokal.
