Werder Bremen prepare to sell Romano Schmid to promoted Serie A outfit | OneFootball

Kicker reports that Werder Bremen are engaged in advanced negotiations with newly-promoted Serie A side Frosinone Calcio over the sale of Austrian international Romano Schmid. A transfer could reportedly be completed within the coming days. The Bundesliga club is expected to receive a high single-digit million euro fee that could rise into eight figures through bonuses.

Such proceeds would provide Werder with further flexibility in their own search for reinforcements after already selling goalkeeper Mio Backhaus to Freiburg for €12m this summer. Schmid’s contractual situation now places Werder under greater pressure to consider a sale. Schmid is due to enter the final year of his contract and no concrete negotiations over an extension have taken place.

Schmid has repeatedly been linked with a departure from the Weserstadion. West Ham United, Aston Villa and Fulham were among the clubs monitoring the Austrian last summer, but no transfer materialised. The 26-year-old ultimately remained with Bremen despite continued Premier League interest and assumed greater responsibility within the squad.

Frosinone nevertheless represents a somewhat unexpected destination. The club near Rome have returned to Serie A for the fourth time and recently underwent an ownership change, with US investment fund Clara Vista acquiring an 80 percent stake and pursuing ambitious plans.

Schmid joined Bremen from RB Salzburg in January 2019 before spending 18 months on loan at Wolfsberger AC. After returning, he experienced Werder’s 2021 relegation before becoming a key figure in their immediate promotion back to the Bundesliga.

The creative midfielder has recorded double-digit Bundesliga goal contributions in each season since 2023/24 and established a personal best with four goals and eight assists last term.

His departure would therefore represent another significant loss from Daniel Thioune’s squad, even if the transfer provides Bremen with important funds for further summer business.
