Eddie Howe says Newcastle United’s Champions League game against Barcelona is the biggest match in the club’s recent history, and that his side have to embrace the size of the task.

The Magpies take on Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 with the first leg at St. James’ Park.

Asked if the game was the biggest in the club’s history, Howe said: “Yes it is, in recent history. Someone could trip me up by going way back, and I’m sure they will. But I think in recent history, for me it is.

“I think that’s very much the mentality we need. We need to rise to the occasion and embrace the size of the game. I think these are things that have helped us this season and we’re looking for the same again.”

Newcastle have already played Barcelona in the Champions League this season and lost 2-1. They go into this tie as the underdogs, but Howe thinks that may help them: “The underdog role has to a degree helped us at times during my time here. We’re going to need to use every psychological tool that we can to help us in this game.

“Because it is undeniable. We are playing a very, very good team. They are outstandingly well coached I have to say, from having watched them thoroughly. They’re a top team.

“There’s only 16 teams left and we are one of them. It’s very much an opportunity to grab a moment that we may never get again. We don’t want to waste this opportunity. We don’t want to kick ourselves and think ‘what if?'”

A key battle in the game will be Newcastle’s left-back – likely to be Lewis Hall – against Lamine Yamal.

Yamal is one of the best players in the world and has 19 goals and 15 assists this season in all competitions.

Asked about the Spaniard, Howe said: “He is an outstanding player. We obviously didn’t face him in the first game so I think it’s a great challenge for us to try and deal with his quality.

“He’s been in outstanding form. From watching their recent games I have been hugely impressed by him. We are going to have to defend very, very well.”
