“We’re so fortunate to have fans who travel everywhere we go,” Nygren

Benjamin Nygren, it’s fair to say has divided opinions among the Celtic support, in his first few months as a Celtic player after arriving in a £1.7m move from Danish club FC Nordsjælland…

The Sweden international got his second Europa League goal for Celtic last night, following on from his winner against Sturm Graz at Celtic Park. He’s also scored five goals in the Scottish Premiership but there’s always been a feeling that there’s more there from him.

Nygren was pretty much a shoe-in starter under Brendan Rodgers as the former manager rightly pointed out that the Swede has goals in him and with so many being taken out of the team with the likes of Kyogo,  Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah all moving on that was going to be needed.

But in that midfield area with Reo Hatate, Arne Engels and Callum McGregor perhaps all suffering from the tactical approach, Nygren also had his struggles. Last night all four, plus Luke McCowan too, all played their part.

Nygren came off the bench, didn’t really do too much as Celtic were protecting a slender 2-1 advantage and then BANG! The wonderful Daizen Maeda set him up and boy did Nygren finish with some aplomb. It was a sensational strike, worthy of winning any match and especially one of such importance to Celtic.

“It feels great.” Benjamin Nygren said to Celtic TV after Celtic’s fabulous performance and result in De Kuip . “It was a needed win and now we’re back in it. I really don’t remember everything from the goal! Daizen laid it back to me, I tried to stay calm and make a good finish. I just tried to put it high and it was a good finish so that was great!

‘It’s always huge to win no matter who you’re playing in a European game. We’ve won here against a good team who are usually in the Champions League. Today was a great game for us and we need to keep on going now.”

Nygren also took time to praise the incredible Celtic travelling support – who seem to have a wee song for incoming Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy already sorted, an amended version of This is the Day that We Win Away.

“We heard them all through the game tonight so that was great,” Nygren said. “We’re so fortunate to have fans who travel everywhere we go. We’re so happy to celebrate the win today with them and all of our fans back home in Glasgow.”

Aye, Celtic are so fortunate to have fans like this and that being recognised by someone at the club is most welcome. Maybe one or two others, should do the same?

Here’s Benjamin Nygren speaking to Celtic TV after Celtic’s 3-1 victory over Feyenoord in Rotterdam in the Europa League…
