United treble winner Wes Brown says he expects Diogo Dalot will continue to be Manchester United’s first choice right back despite the excellent start of new signing Noussair Mazraoui.

In an exclusive interview with The Peoples Person on behalf of SportsCasting, Brown was contemplating the team selection once Luke Shaw returns to the side at left back.

“I think Mazraoui’s been very good. He looks like he’s been there for a while, nothing’s really fazed him,” Brown said.

“But I honestly do think when Luke does come back and gets a few games he’ll still go Dalot and Luke.

“The manager knows he can really trust those two in general.

“Obviously, Mazraoui coming in, I just think is the perfect backup. I don’t think he’s been forced under any pressure, but he has pretty much been involved straight away.

“But I think Dalot and Shaw after a few games run in will keep their position.”

Initially, Erik ten Hag seemed unsure as to who was his best right back, giving an almost equal number of games to Dalot (42) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (34) in the 2022/23 season.

After an excellent start to the 2023/24 campaign, however, the manager settled on Dalot, but with Wan-BissaOfficial: Man United confirm the departure of Aaron Wan-Bissakaka gone, he now faces a similar challenge from the world-class Mazraoui.

Some have speculated that the Moroccan was acquired because Ten Hag is still not 100% convinced in Dalot, so Brown’s words will come as a great boost to the 25 year old, whose superb form last season earned him United’s Player’s Player of the Year award.

Forgotten man Tyrell Malacia may also come into the running for the full back positions as he nears full fitness again after missing last season through injury.

While Dalot and Mazraoui have been needed in most games so far this season, there is likely to be plenty of rotation in the full back positions when the left backs are fit.

Both Shaw and Mazraoui’s injury records suggest they will need to be handled carefully.

Young Harry Amass is also knocking at the door after impressing on the pre-season tour.
