West Bromwich Albion have been lauded for coming out fighting in a turbulent season, with executive director Mark Miles crediting boss James Morrison for uniting the club and securing Championship survival.
ExpressAndStar.com reports that an independent panel upheld an EFL financial regulations breach, prompting a two-point deduction that pushed the Baggies back towards relegation danger, before Morrison ensured they stayed up. He was the third head coach of the campaign after Ryan Mason and Eric Ramsay.
Miles said his return focused on togetherness and the belief that Albion respond when backed into a corner, and he praised Morrison, his staff and the players for aligning the fanbase. He added that the club feel proud and look ahead with optimism.
The long-serving official spent five months away from The Hawthorns from last September after the club decided the roles of managing director and club president, held by Andrew Nestor, were required. Nestor left in January, and Miles returned as executive director. Miles had spent 22 years at the club.
Reflecting on the run-in, he called it a strange period following the PSR verdict, said he trusted Morrison and his coaches to deal with it, and felt togetherness shone as Albion completed the job.
The club had ended a statement after the charge by saying they would let their football do the talking with two games left, and Morrison’s side collected the point required for safety the following day against Ipswich.
