Albion have confirmed George Campbell as their new club captain, with the 25-year-old set to lead the side at Norwich in Saturday’s curtain-raiser and beyond.

The central defender has been at The Hawthorns for 12 months and impressed in his debut season, making 41 appearances. He flourished in the spring when restored to his natural centre-back role under head coach James Morrison.

Campbell succeeds former winger Jed Wallace, who wore the armband for three years before leaving at the end of his contract earlier in the summer.

Alex Mowatt had been among the contenders and captained during pre-season, also taking the armband in the EFL Cup at Rotherham last weekend. He completed a move to Championship rivals Derby on Friday, 24 hours before the new league campaign.

Morrison also views leadership as shared across the squad, highlighting Nat Phillips, Jayson Molumby and new signing Felix Horn Myhre.
