Championship ticket prices are on the agenda again, and this time it is West Brom taking the brunt of it
Ticket prices are often a controversial topic in football, and the latest to be hit by costly admission are West Brom fans.
The Championship is one of the most popular leagues outside of Europe’s top five divisions, the high demand pushing ticket prices up year-on-year.
Baggies fans received a stark reminder of that when their club revealed how much an away ticket for their upcoming games against Ipswich Town will set them back.
Caps are already in place to prevent hefty prices for Premier League away tickets, but no such system exists in the Championship, making away tickets in the division some of the most expensive.
It was revealed via the Baggies’ official website that fans looking to travel to their game against Ipswich will be charged a whopping £38 for an adult ticket.
The hosts are responsible for setting away ticket prices, so there is little West Brom can do other than pass on the information to their fans, but that will not ease the blow to those looking to travel.
What’s worse, the game is a lunchtime kick-off, meaning an early wake-up for those who have already forked out a fortune, to allow time for the three-hour journey over to the South East.
Combined with official club coach travel for the game costing £33, it means many travelling fans will be £71 down before they even step foot out of their houses.
The Championship side published the update on their official X account, and it’s safe to say not everyone is impressed.
“Robbers,” was Mark’s simple one-word reply to the news.
Another fan, Andrew Grainger, added: “£38 for a lunchtime ticket to Ipswich is absolute robbery, vote with your feet and don’t go! Needs to be a cap like the Premier League!”
They weren’t the only ones, with West Brom fan Rees lamenting the “absolutely criminal pricing” in the Championship this season.
Remarkably, the price West Brom fans will be charged to attend the away game at Ipswich is more than travelling supporters in the Premier League are playing this season.
At the beginning of the campaign, Premier League clubs voted unanimously to keep the £30 away ticket cap in place, which has been in place for 10 consecutive seasons now.
That means that on the same weekend that Brighton and Hove Albion fans travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United, and Sunderland supporters head to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea – both paying £30 for their entrance – the Baggies will be paying £8 more for their Portman Road meeting.
That clearly is not a sensible position to be in, and as such MPs have already called for the cap to be extended to the Football League and National League, to at least bring the lower divisions in line with the top tier.
That campaign from politicians followed furore at Coventry City charging Birmingham City fans an eye-watering £45 for their Championship meeting.
