Wolves are set for a summer of uncertainty on their return to the Championship where they could come up against rivals West Brom again.

Wolves have endured a terrible season, with the club set for relegation to the Championship after eight consecutive years in the Premier League.

During that period, Wanderers enjoyed some of the best moments in their modern history, as they recorded back-to-back seventh-placed finishes, reached an FA Cup semi-final and the last eight of the Europa League.

However, the past few years have been difficult, as Wolves have continuously declined, and they have paid the price this season, with relegation now inevitable, and the only challenge for Rob Edwards’ side over the next few months is to try and avoid becoming the worst team in Premier League history.

So, the club already has one eye on next season, and the hierarchy have made it clear they expect to win promotion.

But, the Championship is a notoriously difficult division, and there are several potentially eye-catching fixtures waiting for Wolves, with games against Stoke and Birmingham having an edge to them over the years. Yet, there’s no doubt the big one for all supporters will be West Brom.

The Black Country derby is fierce, with the last meeting between the clubs halted due to crowd trouble as Wolves knocked Albion out of the FA Cup.

Providing they stay up, the Baggies will be desperate to enjoy the bragging rights over their rivals again, and, in an ideal world, they would be competing with Wolves for promotion. It remains to be seen whether that’s possible, and also if Wolves do live up to their tag as one of the favourites.

After all, there will be a high turnover of players at Molineux in the summer, and when asked by FLW about what he expects from Wolves next season, FLW's West Brom fan pundit Callum explained why there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding their rivals.

A lot of it depends on the squad they’re able to build. I can see the Wolves squad being torn apart in the summer, the likes of Joao Gomes, Mateus Mane and several other key players are likely to move on.

Even though they’ve had a disappointing season in the Premier League, you get the sense that quite a lot of their squad is too good for the Championship.

Edwards started well at Middlesbrough, but Kim Hellberg has been a next level upgrade on him, and he didn’t have the best ending at Luton, so he has got something to prove in the Championship.

He has picked up a few points for Wolves, but he hasn’t got a lot of credit in the bank, but he will need to get off to a good start otherwise their fans will be thinking that he was only appointed to get them out of the Championship, but you’ve not proven that to us. It will be interesting to see what the squad looks like at the start of August.”

As mentioned, Albion still have a lot of work to do to ensure they avoid relegation, so that’s what they will be worried about right now.

As for Wolves, it has been an embarrassing season, and it is difficult to predict how they will do.

Their struggles have been down to the ownership, and whilst interim chairman Nathan Shi has been bullish about the need to win promotion at the first attempt, it’s fair to say that many fans won’t believe Fosun given their recent track record.

So, it is a case of waiting and seeing. The parachute payments, combined with high-profile sales, mean Wolves should be in a position to spend big if the owners allow, which should ensure they can challenge for a top two spot, but there’s no guarantee that will happen.

Either way, huge summers await for Wolves and West Brom, and it’s still not clear if the Black Country derby will be played next season.
