West Bromwich Albion's recent form has put them in a prime position to be in the Championship's play-off spots come the end of the 2023-24 season, but they have had a real issue with injuries.

Matt Phillips was recently the latest to be sidelined with a long-term injury, whilst Josh Maja is also out with an ankle problem for most of the rest of the season - Jed Wallace and John Swift have also had their issues this season too.

And despite not having the most funds due to a takeover of the Baggies not being sealed yet, Albion freed up some funds with Jeremy Sarmiento heading back to Brighton at the start of the month - and they are planning on adding another option to their attacking areas.

West Brom in talks to land Bristol City attacker Weimann

According to a report from BristolLive, West Brom are in talks to sign experienced Bristol City attacking midfielder Andreas Weimann, who is keen to enhance his chances of being picked for Austria at EURO 2024 to add to his 21 caps.

The 32-year-old is in the final six months of his contract at Ashton Gate, although he has an appearance-related extension that can be triggered by the Robins, but head coach Liam Manning seems happy to let the Austria international depart.

The report claims that Albion are in advanced talks to bring the versatile Weimann to The Hawthorns, although it is unclear as to whether it would be a loan move or a permanent deal for his services.

And it is thought that it could be linked to a move to take Taylor Gardner-Hickman - who is currently on loan at City from the Baggies - to Manning's side on a permanent basis, although there is already a £1.3 million option in the agreement between the two clubs.

Weimann has started just four of the 10 appearances he has made in the Championship since Manning replaced Nigel Pearson in the Bristol City dugout, and overall in 2023-24 he has one goal and one assist in 20 league outings, averaging 41 minutes per match on the pitch.

The Austrian had more success in past seasons though, with 11 goal contributions in 2022-23, but his best overall campaign came in 2021-22, when he scored 20 times and bagged 11 assists whilst mainly playing on the wing or in the number 10 role.

Weimann deal would offer West Brom more depth and Bristol City more manouevre in transfer window

Even though Weimann has not offered a great deal in the final third for the Robins this season, there's still an argument to be had that in the right system, he can score goals and also create them in the Championship.

Weimann got over a bad knee injury in 2020 to come back and play regular football, but it's clear to see from the last two months that Manning has a vision for Bristol City that doesn't see him play a prominent part.

A new attacking midfielder is high on their agenda and the Scott Twine links will not go away, and getting Weimann's presumably high wages off the books would help towards landing the Burnley dynamo.

For West Brom though, their squad is stretched enough as it is with Sarmiento's recall and Phillips' long-term injury, so the added depth will be very welcome.

And if any Chapmpionship boss is going to get the best out of Weimann at the age of 32, then you'd trust Carlos Corberan to be that man.
