The Baggies are searching for yet another permanent head coach after Eric Ramsay’s time in charge came to an end after just 44 days.

The 34-year-old failed to win any of his nine games in charge, leaving the team sitting 21st in the table, just one point clear of the relegation zone.

A 1-1 draw at home to Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night proved the final straw for Ramsay’s time at the Hawthorns.

George Campbell had put the hosts ahead, but Lyndon Dykes’ second half strike levelled the score, and ultimately ended the manager’s reign.

Here we look at all the latest news surrounding West Brom’s search for a new manager…

Charlie Austin’s verdict on Eric Ramsay’s sacking

Charlie Austin has raised his concerns regarding West Brom potentially suffering relegation to League One following the decision to part ways with Ramsay this week.

He believes that the appointment of the 34-year-old was the wrong decision, and the former Albion striker has criticised the club for taking such a big gamble on an inexperienced coach, comparing their situation to Celtic’s appointment of Wilfried Nancy.

"West Brom and Leicester are both down there, it’s quite shocking,” said Austin, via Talksport.

“When you look at that appointment, that was wrong.

“The pedigree wasn’t there to go to a club like West Brom, to go to the Championship.

"It really wasn’t.

“We keep rolling the dice.

“It’s a gamble they’ve taken, and unfortunately, could be a gamble that they’re going to pay the price.

“I don’t get it, when a club like Celtic did it with Wilfried Nancy.

"It’s painful, let’s be honest.

“That appointment Celtic made could cost them the title up there, and West Brom could cost them Championship football.

“They could be going to League One."

Dressing room reaction to Eric Ramsay sacking

It has been reported by the Daily Mail that West Brom players were regularly left puzzled by the instructions given by Ramsay following his January appointment.

In particular, the decision to move Mikey Johnston to right-wing-back was met with a lot of confusion given how well he had been performing this season.

However, it’s believed that the players didn’t down tools on the former Manchester United and Chelsea coach.

But, ultimately, it was felt within the dressing room that the manager tried to change too much too quickly, highlighting that they were never fully behind him in his 44 days in charge either.

Darren Moore tipped to take over

When asked about who could potentially take charge at the Hawthorns, FLW’s West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess named Darren Moore as a potential option.

The 51-year-old was in charge of the Baggies from April 2018 to March 2019, and has since been manager at Doncaster Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town and Port Vale.

While Moore is currently out of work, FLW’s fan pundit suggested that bringing in somebody who is available may be more tenable after the compensation paid to bring in Ramsay failed to work out.

“I think when you look at the pool of managers who are available now, it’s been drastically reduced with the likes of Gary Rowett going to Leicester, Michael O’Neill to Blackburn,” Burgess told Football League World.

“And I’d very much doubt that, after paying compensation for Eric Ramsay to bring him in from Minnesota in the first place, that Albion will probably not be in a position to do that again.

“So I think you’re probably looking at a short-term appointment to the end of the season on an interim basis.

“I think that I could possibly see them going for somebody like Darren Moore, who could galvanise the group and try and restore that unity between the fans and the players, like he was able to do in his initial interim spell at the Hawthorns.”

James Morrison interim opportunity

Following the decision to dismiss Ramsay, West Brom have appointed former player James Morrison as manager on an interim basis.

The 39-year-old is likely to oversee Albion’s upcoming clash against Oxford United on 28 February, and he may even be in charge for their match with Sheffield United on 7 March.

No timeframe has been given for when a permanent appointment could be made, and it is also possible that Morrison could be in charge for the remainder of the campaign.
