West Brom have made a mixed start to the season following the appointment of Ryan Mason as manager.

The Baggies have struggled for goals, which has led to inconsistent results and a disappointing standing in the table going into the November international break.

Albion are 14th after 15 games played, with 21 points to their name and a four point gap to the play-off places.

The January transfer window could prove an important part of the campaign for the Midlands outfit, as incomings and outgoings could dictate their strength for the second half of the year.

A number of key players were sold in the summer such as Tom Fellows and Torbjorn Heggem, but it might not prevent others from departing when the market reopens in the new year.

Karlan Grant’s time at West Brom could end in January

When asked if there is one player who could be sold or loaned in the new year, FLW’s West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess named Karlan Grant as the most likely option.

He believes the club could look to make something from the 28-year-old given he will be entering the final six months of his contract this winter. Grant has been a divisive figure at the Hawthorns for some time, with the Baggies failing to see real vindication on the reported £15 million fee which was shelled out to Huddersfield Town for his services back in 2020.

The winger has often struggled for consistency but did kick on somewhat last term following a solid loan spell at Cardiff City, although he's struggling to make his way into Mason's plans at present.

“There’s no one really who stands out as a 100 per cent player who I believe will be nailed on to leave the club in January,” Burgess told Football League World.

“But one player that could possibly be is Karlan Grant.

“With just six months left on his contract and his deal set to expire in the summer, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him possibly be someone where the club try to get some money out of him.

“Other than that, I think it’s difficult to name players who we could see leaving the club, as I think we’ve got the majority of the value from our squad from players who left in the summer from players like Heggem and Fellows.”

Pressure is mounting on Mason’s position at West Brom due to the team’s poor form in recent weeks.

This is the young coach’s first time as manager in his career, having previously worked at Tottenham Hotspur under the likes of Ange Postecoglou and Antonio Conte.

A 2-1 win over Oxford United last weekend ended a run of four games without a victory going into the final international break of the calendar year.

Next up for the Baggies is a trip to face league leaders Coventry City on 22 November in a 12.30pm kick-off.

Karlan Grant’s departure could be useful for West Brom

If West Brom want to raise some funds in January, then finding a market for Grant could be a smart way to go about that.

The forward doesn’t have much of a role in Mason’s plans, having started four of their 15 league games.

He has also yet to contribute a single goal or assist, so he wouldn’t be a huge loss to the team and selling him early would also get his wages off the books.
