FLW's West Brom fan pundit has named which summer signing excites him the most.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
West Brom completed nine signings during the summer transfer window as they look to compete for promotion to the Premier League this season.
Ryan Mason oversaw a busy period of player trading for the Baggies, having been appointed as manager at the end of the previous campaign, taking on his first role as the head coach in his career after previously working as an assistant at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Midlands outfit made permanent additions such as Aune Heggebo, Nat Phillips, Alfie Gilchrist, George Campbell, Krystian Bielik and Chris Mepham.
Meanwhile, Samuel Iling-Junior, Toby Collyer and Charlie Taylor also joined on loan for the season.
Albion will be hoping these additions all bolster the side after they finished just outside the top six last year, earning a ninth place finish under Tony Mowbray.
When asked which summer addition excites them the most, Football League World's West Brom fan pundit, Callum Burgess, named Aune Heggebo.
He believes the forward is most likely to get fans on their feet during a game, and that he has the tools to be a top player at a Championship level.
“I think that out of Albion’s nine summer signings, you’ve got Chris Mepham, Nat Phillips in defence, but the one that has the potential to get myself and the rest of the Albion fanbase really excited for the season ahead is Aune Heggebo,” Burgess told Football League World.
“I think he’s been really impressive in his appearances so far, his ability to hold off defenders, link up play and to keep battling all 90 minutes long is really, really impressive.
“And he’s shown, for a tall striker, he’s got really good dribbling ability as well, which you wouldn’t really expect.
“For example, there was a moment against Stoke where the ball was hit towards him, he took it down on his chest, brought it down and then started to lead an attack. I think it really does highlight his ability.
“And if he can start to add goals to his game, like he did in his final appearances in Norway, then we’ve got a really, really good striker on our hands.
“If he does add that finishing ability to his game, and starts to add more and more goals like he did against Derby County in the Carabao Cup, then I think that he can be a really, really good striker at this level and beyond.”
West Brom are currently second in the Championship table, having earned 10 points from a possible 12 going into the September international break.
West Brom have made good use of under-utilised markets like Norway since the change in ownership, which is a promising sign for their recruitment strategy long-term.
Heggebo is the latest example of a left-field deal that could work out quite well after Torbjorn Heggem proved a key part of the team last season before being turned into a tidy profit with a sale this year.
Signed by the Baggies for a reported fee of €5.5m/£4.7m in early July, Heggebo arrived at The Hawthorns off the back some strong seasons for Norwegian outfit Brann.
The 6'1" centre-forward graduated from Brann's youth system in 2019, but it wasn't until the 2021 campaign in which the big striker began to establish himself as a key first-team star.
Over 50 goals in just shy of 150 total appearances by this summer, Heggebo left having firmly cemented his status as one of the top strikers in Norwegian football, and given his profile of being a big target man striker who excels in his hold-up play, he looks to have the physical tools in order to make a successful transition to English football.
The 24-year-old has yet to score in the Championship, however, but his performances have shown a lot of potential, and surely the goals will start flowing after this September international break.
He has made a smooth transition to English football, immediately cementing himself as an important part of Mason’s plans having started all four league games so far, so it’s no surprise he’s someone fans are getting excited about.
