New Albion boss Tony Mowbray will speak to Jed Wallace and John Swift about their recent struggles at The Hawthorns.
West Brom boss Tony Mowbray has revealed he plans to talk to Jed Wallace and John Swift in a bid to reignite their careers at The Hawthorns, as reported by the Express & Star.
Wallace and Swift were both recruited in the summer of 2022, with the pair possessing high reputations in the Championship from their previous stints at Millwall and Reading respectively.
But in recent times, the attacking duo have become fringe players at Albion, with both largely being used off the substitutes bench for the first half of the Championship season.
With former Baggies boss Carlos Corberan moving on and Tony Mowbray taking the reins for a second time, there’s a fresh opportunity for Wallace and Swift to stake a claim for a regular starting spot in the Black Country.
Speaking at his unveiling, Mowbray outlined the plan he had to see Wallace and Swift return to the top of their games.
Chatting with the media before his first game back in charge at Middlesbrough, Tony Mowbray praised the wealth of attacking options he has inherited at the football club, and admitted he will try to get to the bottom of Jed Wallace and John Swift’s stuttering form.
Reported by the Express & Star, Mowbray said: “"What I found at this club, there's not too many of them (moaners or sulkers) and yet from the outside looking in I might be thinking, because I'm on record, I've said I always thought Jed Wallace was one of the best players in the league. What a footballer, at Millwall. A one-man show, really. He was devastating.
"Yet here I find him on the fringes of the team, on the cusp of the team. Is he alright? What's he feeling?
"So I sit down with Jed and I'll talk to him about my thoughts and what I'm thinking. Same with John Swift. You can throw John into that as well. What a footballer at Reading.
"Double figure goals most years. What a player. I've already seen how technical he is and how brilliant he is with the football. Are they okay?
"I'll talk to them. We'll have a cup of tea, sit down. They'll hopefully feel that I'm a decent human being. I'm here to win football matches.”
It’s difficult to know where it’s gone so wrong for Jed Wallace and John Swift in their Albion careers, but the pair look shadows of their former selves and haven’t managed to be a driving force in getting the club back into the Premier League.
It’s remarkable to see the duo haven’t registered an attacking contribution between them throughout the season so far, given their previously impressive track records in the second tier.
A tweak in the system to suit Tony Mowbray’s style could be the difference maker in bringing Swift and Wallace back to life, with the Baggies attack becoming so much more frightening with the two surging in confidence.
