Manchester United salvaged a point against West Ham to go five matches unbeaten under interim head coach Michael Carrick at the London Stadium.

Tomáš Souček’s early second-half strike was cancelled out by Benjamin Sesko’s dramatic injury-time equaliser, as the Hammers missed the chance to go level on points with Nottingham Forest in 17th.

As for United, they retain their place in the Premier League’s top four but are just a point above Liam Rosenior’s Cheslea following the Blues’ 2-2 draw with Leeds United.

Manchester United began the match on the front foot, playing with confidence and enjoyed most of the possession in the first half.

West Ham threatened early through Jarrod Bowen, but his glancing header drifted wide and failed to trouble Lammens.

The hosts went close again soon after when Crycensio Summerville tested the goalkeeper, only for Senne Lammens to punch clear for a corner, which ultimately came to nothing.

Harry Maguire went close to opening the scoring for the visitors, but his header drifted off target.

In the opening 20 minutes, West Ham registered more attempts on goal than Manchester United.

United came agonizingly close through Luke Shaw, whose effort was brilliantly cleared off the line by former Red Devils defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Despite controlling much of the possession, the visitors were unable to find the breakthrough as the match remained goalless at half-time.

West Ham United took the lead early in the second half, with Tomáš Souček heading home a well-placed cross from Jarrod Bowen.

Casemiro thought he had the equalizer for the visitors, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside.

United grew frustrated in the final seven minutes as West Ham created an impenetrable defence as the visitors struggled to find the net.

Bryan Mbeumo went for goal, but his effort was blocked by Axel Disasi, leading to a corner that came to nothing.

Joshua Zirkzee could have rescued a point for United but his header was inches wide of the post.

Šeško scored a crucial equaliser for Manchester United, helping them avoid a first defeat in four matches.

Manchester United fans will have to keep waiting for Frank Illett’s – known online as The United Strand – elusive haircut, after he vowed to shave his locks if the team won five consecutive matches.

United couldn’t sustain their recent form, as set-piece strategies that had troubled Tottenham proved ineffective against West Ham, denying them a fifth straight victory.

Next up for Manchester United is a trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium to face Everton on Monday, February 23.

While hosts West Ham travel to Staffordshire to face Burton in the FA Cup on Saturday lunchtime.
