West Ham United legend Tony Cottee believes a total clear out is needed at the London Stadium this summer after the Hammers’ 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United pushed them to the brink of relegation.

The Irons’ survival hopes are hanging by a thread following a deeply damaging defeat against Newcastle.

Given the Hammers’ vastly inferior goal difference, Tottenham Hotspur need just one point from their last two games to retain their Premier League status, which would send West Ham down to the Championship next season.

Against the Magpies, Nuno Espirito Santo’s back-three system failed miserably yet again with the Hammers falling behind 2-0 inside the opening 18 minutes.

The Portuguese manager was ultimately forced into an early tactical change, introducing Taty Castellanos and ditching his back-three system only 26 minutes in.

Along with managerial decisions, individual performances have also harmed West Ham’s hopes of survival as new signings Pablo, who arrived in the January transfer window, is yet to score in 16 appearances.

Castellanos went on to score West Ham’s only goal on Sunday, further highlighting the Irons’ struggles in attack, with the club having failed to score in 13 of their 37 league games this season – only Wolves and Nottingham Forest have failed to score more often this season.

Cottee, who scored 146 goals for the Hammers, criticised both the performance and the tactical set-up from West Ham against the Magpies, suggesting Nuno was at fault for deploying a back-three system despite the Irons needing a victory.

The former West Ham striker insisted that too many players have failed to perform during the campaign.

Cottee stressed that complete clear out is needed throughout the club this summer to bring back competitiveness back.

Cottee wrote on X: “Really poor performance. 3 at the back when you’ve got to win? Nuno’s at fault for this!

“Too many players not good enough ….

“Total clear out needed from top to bottom….”

West Ham will now be eagerly hoping Chelsea can do them a favour when they face Spurs at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, where a win for the home side would at least take the relegation battle to the final day.

The Hammers will play their last Premier League game this season against Leeds United.

It does appear they will be relegated, but West Ham are planning for the future with an eye on their recruitment model .
