Igor sealed his move from Brighton in the final hours of the summer transfer window
Igor Julio has hailed West Ham manager Graham Potter’s Premier League experience after joining the club on loan from Brighton on Deadline Day.
The Brazilian centre-back saw a move to Crystal Palace collapse due to issues with his medical before joining West Ham in the final hours of the transfer window.
Igor bolsters West Ham’s options in defence following the departure of Nayef Aguerd to Marseille, and the 27-year-old says Potter reassured him he would be given a chance to prove his worth after struggling for consistent minutes at Brighton.
“First of all, he gave me the opportunity to come to a big club and told me he would use me,” Igor said, speaking for the first time as a West Ham player.
“(He told me) that he would give me the chance I really need. That was very convincing,” Igor, who started just 10 Premier League games last season, continued.
“He’s also a very well-known coach. I think that’s important for me at this point in my career. To work with a manager who has so much knowledge of the Premier League.”
Igor highlighted his qualities with the ball, but also his aggressiveness out of possession, as his best traits, with Potter praising the defender’s Premier League experience.
“He is an experienced defender with a good pedigree, who knows the Premier League well and has impressed during his time with Brighton,” Potter said.
“He has strengths and qualities that we believe will help us and add to what we already have here, and I know he is really excited about the challenge and wearing the West Ham United shirt.
“It’s been a positive few days with the arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and Soungoutou Magassa, followed by a great win at Nottingham Forest yesterday, and it’s nice to round it off by welcoming Igor to the club.”
West Ham head into the international break with cause for optimism after an impressive 3-0 win away to Nottingham Forest and have added depth to a squad desperately in need of some fresh impetus after a difficult start to the new season.
