West Ham United have initiated talks with Girona full-back Arnau Martinez ahead of a potential move this summer, according to Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto.
A right-back is one of the top objectives for the Hammers in this transfer window as they plan to build a competitive squad ahead of the new season.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the only reliable right-back at present, with Vladimir Coufal recently leaving the London Stadium after his contract expired.
The English defender was one of the bright spots in an otherwise lacklustre campaign for the Hammers last season.
The 27-year-old racked up two goals and five assists in 36 games in the Premier League, punctuated by solid performances, eventually bagging West Ham’s Player of the Season award.
While Celta Vigo right-back Oscar Mingueza is also being monitored, West Ham have now added his compatriot Martinez to their wishlist.
Martinez has blossomed into one of the top full-backs in La Liga following his incredible performances for Girona.
He also drew attention from giants like Barcelona and Atletico Madrid last summer after helping Girona secure Champions League qualification.
Although Girona couldn’t hit the same heights last season, Martinez remained a key cog in the defence, featuring in 39 games in all competitions.
The 22-year-old has a contract running until 2027, and he looks primed to make a big leap in his career.
The Spaniard’s €15 million valuation provides an excellent opportunity for the Hammers. He has the technical quality and physical endurance to thrive in the Premier League.
West Ham are also actively working on a deal to sign Slavia Prague left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf. The Czech giants have confirmed that the Senegalese will leave this summer.
The Hammers have a decision to make on defender Nayef Aguerd, who has received offers from Sunderland, Marseille, Real Sociedad and AS Roma.
