West Ham United are trying to get Edson Álvarez out of the door before the late-August transfer deadline, with Olympiacos offering €8 million for the Mexican midfielder and Real Sociedad proposing a loan.

According to César Luis Merlo, no agreement has been completed. Álvarez is considering both options, although staying in elite European football is understood to be his priority. His West Ham contract runs until June 2028.

West Ham have little reason to hold out

There’s a painful figure attached to this one. West Ham paid €38 million to sign Álvarez from Ajax in 2023. They won’t come close to getting that money back. That ship has sailed.

Last season, a loan spell at Fenerbahce went badly. Two ankle injuries between January and May restricted him to 17 appearances, with no goals and one assist. The Turkish club had a €22.5 million option to buy and decided against using it, with his medical history reportedly a major factor. That tells you plenty.

At the 2026 World Cup, Álvarez played in all five of Mexico’s matches but started only twice, against South Korea and the Czech Republic. Since returning to London, his involvement has been minimal, with one substitute appearance in the EFL Cup.

A loan solves very little

Real Sociedad’s interest might look attractive on paper. It isn’t necessarily good business for West Ham.

Send Álvarez to Spain, and the club still carry his wages, reportedly around £5 million to £6 million a year. Then, 12 months from now, the same question comes back around: what do they do with him?

Olympiacos offer something rather different. Cash. Permanence. A clean break. For a player whose stock has fallen sharply, €8 million isn’t disastrous. It’s simply the price of getting a difficult contract off the books.

The Hammers should take the money

There’s always a temptation to cling to an expensive signing and hope his value somehow rebounds. Football clubs do it all the time. Sometimes they get lucky. West Ham shouldn’t gamble here.

The injuries, limited recent football and failed Fenerbahçe purchase option have already weakened Álvarez’s market. With the window closing, bargaining power isn’t exactly sitting in east London’s back pocket. Take the €8 million. Move on. Keep the wage bill under control and free up space for players Nuno Espírito Santo actually wants to use.

It may feel like admitting a €30 million mistake. But paying millions more to avoid admitting it would be worse.
