West Ham United Reject The Chance To Sign This Premier League Goalkeeper: Is This A Good Decision?

We reported earlier that West Ham had been offered the chance to sign out-of-favour goalkeeper Andre Onana from Manchester United in the summer transfer window. Now, the Daily Mail has reported that the Hammers have rejected the opportunity to sign the 29-year-old this summer.

The club has already signed Mad Hermansen from Leicester City in this window and is still looking for more options at the goalpost. It was at this moment that the Cameroon international’s name cropped up in the discussions, as he is no longer wanted at Old Trafford. However, West Ham believe that Onana offers nothing better or different from what they currently have in their squad.

West Ham will now focus their search on another goalkeeper, and the 29-year-old will remain at Manchester United for the time being. The decision came at a time when Tottenham Hotspur, on the other hand, were also eyeing West Ham United playmaker Lucas Paqueta. On one hand, a big London club is trying to get players out of West Ham, while on the other hand, the same club is taking steps cautiously regarding new signings.

Why does this decision from West Ham seem right?

If we look at this decision carefully, West Ham’s thinking seems logical. They have recently signed a promising goalkeeper like Mads Hermansen, who can prove to be better for the club’s playing style in the coming years.

In such a situation, if a player like Onana was brought in, it could have hindered Hermansen’s growth. Bringing in a new goalkeeper just for the sake of it is not appropriate according to the club’s strategy, especially when your coaching and scouting team believe that you already have better options.

This decision is even more correct considering Onana’s recent form. He made mistakes in many big matches at the beginning of last season for Manchester United. The Cameroon international’s performance in the Champions League and recently against Grimsby made it clear that consistency is his biggest challenge.

His distribution ability is good, but the Hammers need a reliable and stable goalkeeper at the moment, not a player who is prone to criticism and pressure. This is why the club did not take the risk of bringing in Onana.

Ultimately, this decision reflects West Ham’s planning and balance. They want to take a selective approach to strengthen their squad, where each signing will have a long-term impact. Onana does not represent that stability at the moment.

Trusting Hermansen and keeping the competition within the squad balanced shows the club is heading in the right direction. Both Tottenham’s interest in Paqueta and the offer for Onana show that there is still excitement around West Ham in the transfer market, but the club is making every move carefully.
