Tottenham may have the better of the recent head-to-head record, but the London Stadium has not been a happy hunting ground for them. They have not won on any of their last five visits, while each of the three most recent encounters there have ended 1-1. Spurs also lost five of their final six away Premier League games last season, though West Ham are without a win on home soil in six attempts. With all that in mind, we could see another stalemate here.
Paqueta was a player heavily linked with a departure from West Ham during the recent transfer window, with Aston Villa linked as a potential destination. However, the Brazilian has responded brilliantly to that speculation, while his dedication to the Hammers was evident during his celebration after scoring against Nottingham Forest. In fact, he has netted in each of their last three games, so he will fancy his chances of extending that streak here.
The pressure was already on Graham Potter following West Ham’s start to this season.
The Hammers opened with heavy defeats against Sunderland and Chelsea, while bowing out of the EFL Cup at the hands of Wolves.
However, Potter and West Ham breathed a huge sigh of relief following their late, late show against Nottingham Forest last time out, as they scored three times in the final seven minutes to stun their hosts at the City Ground.
By contrast, Spurs enjoyed a promising start to the Premier League season, overcoming Burnley and Manchester City with five goals without reply.
Yet, Thomas Frank was given a reality check before the international break, with Evanilson’s early strike enough for Bournemouth to condemn his side to a 1-0 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Potter could hand debuts to new signings Soungoutou Magassa, Dimitri Colau and Igor Julio, with the latter arriving on loan from Brighton on deadline day. The Hammers could also have George Earthy available after an ankle injury.
Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani could make their first appearances in a Tottenham shirt, while Dominic Solanke and Yves Bissouma are available again for Thomas Frank. However, Radu Dragusin, Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison are among Spurs’ long-term absentees.
Tottenham have lost just one of their last eight meetings with West Ham, winning four times during that span.
