West Ham United travel to Tyneside on Sunday evening, fighting to survive and protect their long-term position in the top flight.
Nuno Espírito Santo’s side sit 18th in the table and desperately need points to retain their survival hopes. The Hammers trail safety by two points after suffering a painful 1-0 defeat against league leaders Arsenal last weekend. They have failed to find the net in each of their last three away league matches.
Another blank on Sunday would equal a dismal four-game scoreless away streak last recorded in May 2015. However, the visitors can complete a rare Premier League double over Newcastle following their 3-1 victory in November. Nuno’s men also triumphed 2-0 at this stadium last season and will look to exploit Newcastle’s defensive frailties.
Nuno received a major squad boost with almost his entire first-team group available for selection. Winger Adama Traoré remains the only confirmed absentee as he continues to recover from a quadriceps injury.
The manager must decide whether to retain the 3-4-2-1 shape used against Arsenal or revert to a back four. Reverting to a traditional system would likely see defender Jean-Clair Todibo drop down to the substitutes’ bench.
Tomás Souček anchors the midfield, sitting one goal involvement away from reaching a milestone of 50 in the division. The Czech international enjoys facing the Magpies, having scored five top-flight goals against them during his career.
Former Newcastle striker Callum Wilson will push for a start after a late equaliser was controversially disallowed last weekend. Wilson previously netted twice against Bournemouth in November but faces stiff competition from Taty Castellanos to lead the frontline. Crysencio Summerville and Jarrod Bowen will look to exploit space on the counter-attack against a fragile home defence.
West Ham predicted XI: Hermansen; Todibo, Disasi, Mavropanos; Wan-Bissaka, Soucek, Fernandes, Diouf; Bowen, Summerville; Castellanos.
The Premier League match at St James’ Park kicks off at 17:30 BST on Sunday, 17 May 2026.
