West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez has publicly denied allegations linking him to a kidnapping plot in Mexico.
The player said in a social media post that he categorically rejects any attempt to associate his name with events unrelated to him, and has instructed lawyers to protect his reputation.
Alvarez, 28, had previously ignored rumours, but responded as the claims intensified. He says he has no responsibility for the actions of third parties, including relatives of a former partner.
He adds that no evidence has been produced to support the accusations, arguing that any complaint should be taken to the authorities and the courts.
He also says he will not allow his name or image to be used to fuel conflicts or chase publicity.
The Mexico international says he has spent nearly 10 years steering clear of scandal, crediting a reputation built through hard work, discipline and his family’s values.
