Westerlo have responded to the farcical end to the weekend’s game against Genk by sacking head coach Rik De Mil. In a statement released on the club’s website, the side claim that they have sacked the head coach after the values and norms of Westerlo were brought into question. As reported yesterday, the end of the game between the sides is currently under investigation for lack of fair play and potentially match fixing.

With both sides needing a point to achieve their final day goals, Genk were allowed to pass the ball around the back under no pressure with minutes left in the game. This came despite Genk being down to 10 men, with Westerlo players happy to just stand and watch. Players were already shaking hands before the final whistle, in what was a farcical scene for a professional game of football.

De Mil was brought in during the season with the task of keeping the side in the Pro League. Under the former Club Brugge caretaker head coach, performances and results certainly did improve. However, the side will now have to rethink the future, given that they had envisioned De Mil being in charge for the 2024/2025 campaign.
