FC Barcelona are busy making their moves to strengthen their team for the upcoming 2025-26 season, despite having been one of the most competitive teams in Europe during the last season.

The Blaugranes have already signed the goalkeeper Joan Garcia from RCD Espanyol after having paid his €25 million release clause, and are now looking to strengthen their attack by signing a left winger.

Recent reports suggest that the Catalans have already reached an agreement with the Athletic Club forward Nico Williams for this purpose, but this move still remains to be finalized.

An update on this operation was provided by the Barcelona Sporting Director, Deco, as he appeared in a recent interview with La Vanguardia. As Mundo Deportivo has highlighted, Deco revealed that the club is trying to sign Nico:

“Both Nico and other players, as of today, are showing a desire to come… if the circumstances for Nico are right, then we’re going to try.”

The Blaugrana official also revealed how Barcelona are going to approach this operation and confirmed his meeting with Nico’s agent:

“To sign a player, you have to follow the right steps. First, you talk to his agent, then you discuss contractual situations, and then you see if the club demands the release clause or is open to negotiating. – In Nico’s case, it’s very clear, he has a clause… we’ve met with his agent to understand what the player wants, and from there we’ll see if it’s possible.”

“The most important thing is that players like Nico or Luis Díaz and other names are players who want to come. They’re good people, hungry and eager to keep succeeding.”

While downplaying its importance, Deco admitted that the friendship between Nico and Yamal will be good for the team:

“The fact that Nico and Lamine are friends is fine. But this is not a club for friends. We come here to work and try to win. If they get along, even better.”

Strengthening the wings

In this regard, the Barcelona official also reasoned why they tried to sign a winger this summer:

“We need to reinforce that position. As wingers, we only have Lamine and Raphinha, because Ferran is increasingly becoming a forward. When we don’t have Lamine or Raphinha, the team’s level drops. The names to strengthen this position depend on price and quality.”

Deco has a point when he says that the Barcelona team is lacking in depth on the wings and eliminating this weakness by signing a player of Nico Williams’ level will definitely be a great move by the Catalan club.
