Weverton, 38, is set to become Grêmio’s first choice, a move that resets the goalkeeper hierarchy and places Tiago Volpi’s future in doubt.
He is due to land in Porto Alegre late on Friday morning, then head straight to the Arena for a 13:15 unveiling, according to Globo.com.
Volpi, who started in Wednesday’s defeat to São José, said he has had no offers, is happy at the club and feels able to compete with Weverton and Gabriel Grando. He also left open the possibility of a departure, using phrases such as if he stays and noting that football is dynamic. His contract runs until the end of the season.
He will take over in an attempt to end the uncertainty that has lingered since Marcelo Grohe left in early 2019. Across eight years at Palmeiras he lifted 12 trophies and departed to tributes, with the São Paulo side releasing him without a fee.
His arrival formalises a new pecking order in goal at Grêmio, with competition now set between Weverton, Volpi and Grando.
