Leicester City are in danger of tumbling from the Premier League to League One in successive seasons. Four clubs have suffered that slide in the Premier League era.
According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, the precedent begins with Swindon. Their only Premier League season in 1993-94 ended with 100 goals conceded and relegation, then another drop to the third tier, before bouncing back as champions.
Wolves fell from the Premier League in 2012, then into League One after Stale Solbakken and Dean Saunders struggled. Appointing Kenny Jackett, they surged back as League One champions, then, after four Championship seasons, went up as 2018 winners following Fosun’s investment that brought in Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota.
Sunderland finished bottom in both the Premier League and the Championship, then missed an immediate return by placing fifth and losing the League One play-offs. Sold by Ellis Short after the Championship drop, they later changed hands again to Kyril Louis-Dreyfus. It took four seasons to escape League One, promotion came via the play-offs, then after three Championship campaigns they rose to the Premier League, where they have impressed this term and look to have secured their status.
Luton completed a double drop last season, their unlikely Premier League promotion swiftly followed by relegation to League One. Now on a second manager in Jack Wilshere, they sit 11th, four points off the play-offs, and have an EFL Trophy final with Stockport at Wembley next month.
