One of the defining visuals of Calum McFarlane’s first spell as interim manager was club captain Reece James pushing the understated young coach towards the away fans at the Etihad in January to receive their applause after helping Chelsea earn an unexpected draw.
Since McFarlane’s return to the big chair, James has been out injured. But according to the coach, who spoke in his press conference today, the right back has still played an important role.
“Yeah, Reece has been brilliant from the day I stepped up in January, to be honest,” McFarlane said.
“This time around he’s injured, so it’s a little bit of a different role, like you said. Even though he’s still young, he’s massively experienced, he’s won major tournaments, he loves the club, he cares about the club, so he’s driving and pushing standards every day. We have a leadership group here that he’s a massive part of, and he’s been a massive support to me and all the staff involved on an interim basis.”
McFarlane noted that there had been a major change in the mood at Stamford Bridge since the all important FA Cup win last week.
We were all very curious about whether Reece James could feature on Monday, and McFarlane gave an update on him as well as Levi Colwill, who is also returning from injury.
