Rob Edwards is under pressure at Wolves as they go into the 2026/27 Championship season, where promotion will be the aim.

Wolves have started their squad overhaul as they try to build a team that is capable of winning promotion next season.

It has been an embarrassing campaign for Wanderers, who were relegated from the Premier League with just 20 points, having won just three times in 38 games.

Vitor Pereira paid the price for their historically bad start by losing his job, and whilst Rob Edwards’ appointment eventually prompted a slight upturn in form, he struggled to get a tune out of the group.

Rob Edwards has been under pressure from Wolves fans

Even though there is an understanding that the squad is nowhere near the standard it should’ve been, with Wolves’ recruitment having been a problem for years, there was still a feeling that Edwards could’ve done more.

There have been complaints over the style of play, and the reluctance to play with more intent despite relegation having been on the cards for months.

At times, that anger has been reflected at the ground, with Edwards facing serious criticism after a recent draw with ten-man Sunderland.

However, it seems the hierarchy are going to stick with Edwards, as Andre referenced the manager after signing a new contract, and a move for Kieran Trippier is close to completion.

Clearly, promotion will be the aim next season, and when asked by FLW if Edwards can bring success to Molineux, Wolves fan pundit Thomas admitted he can understand why sections of the support are against the boss, but he backed him to deliver if he is given suitable support.

It’s difficult. It’s divided because we haven’t really seen what he is capable of in his time at Wolves. We’ve seen him take a Luton team to the Premier League with much less resources, but we’ve also seen them drop out and struggle in the Championship the year after.

Edwards has struggled with a Plan B this season, but, again, is that because he inherited a team not suited to his style of play, or players, and a team that was so devoid of confidence? He still took us from two points to 20 points, and with that team, some would say it’s a decent return.

The issue is we’re not seeing the best from a Wolves team. Maybe we’ve become a bit expectant after the glory years (under Nuno), and the last five years have been a steady decline, and I wonder if some fans are hung up on that it’s not Nuno football with Neves, Moutinho etc. We’ve moved a long way since then, with player sales, and not the best ownership.

But, I’d like to see Edwards do well, and I think he has got it in him if he is given the resources to do so. I think he can succeed, but I know there are a lot of fans who think otherwise. They point to a lack of experience. He hasn’t been inspiring this season, but, what can he do? I’m not sure Pep Guardiola could’ve taken over and saved the season to be honest.”

Wolves must have a productive transfer window to solve glaring squad issues

It can’t be understated how ill-equipped this Wolves squad was for the Premier League, as they’re lacking quality and balance all over the squad.

The major priority has to be to rectify that, and, providing the deal for Trippier is finalised, it’s a great start, as he is a huge upgrade on Wolves' current options at right-back!

So, it’s difficult to judge Edwards properly. Most fans acknowledge the group he took over weren’t good enough, but there has been little to go off to suggest he can make the positive changes the fans want to see, as outlined above.

Right now, the focus has to be on making more signings of the calibre of Trippier, and then it will be down to Edwards to deliver.

There is going to be huge pressure on the ex-Luton chief going into the new season, and he knows a fast start is essential if he is to get the fans onside, otherwise there will be a very real chance that he loses his job.
