Liverpool face the prospect of losing Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer at the end of the 2025/26 season. That is unless they can convince the centre-back to sign a new contract.

Having first transferred to the Anfield club from RB Leipzig for £35m back in 2021, Konate is now into the last few months of his deal.

There have been plenty of reports over the last year or so suggesting that Konate was in contract talks with the Reds and sporting director Richard Hughes.

But so far those negotiations have not come to a successful conclusion.

Konate free to discuss move in January

A big problem for Liverpool is that very soon Konate will be FREE to discuss a free transfer to any potentially interested overseas clubs.

Real Madrid are of course right there for Konate - with claims from the Spanish capital that Los Blancos were seeking the 26-year-old to lead a defensive rebuild.

Consequently, the Premier League champions have been linked with several centre-backs.

Liverpool not giving up on Konate

A deal for Marc Guehi was close back in the summer but Crystal Palace pulled the plug in the last moments of transfer deadline day.

Others - such as Ronald Araujo and Ousmane Diomande - have also been mentioned as potential Liverpool arrivals. But Liverpool have not yet thrown in the towel on Konate.

Konate wants deal to match his status

Indeed according to Ekrem Konur discussions remain ongoing between the club and Konate’s entourage.

The problem right now would appear to be a gap between what Liverpool can offer and what Konate is demanding.

“Liverpool and Ibrahima Konaté are stuck in contract talks,” he writes on X.

“The 26-year-old centre-back wants a deal that matches his status as a key starter. No breakthrough yet.”

It’s been reported that Konate is earning around £140k per week on his current Liverpool contract and he would like to go beyond the £200k per week mark for his new deal.
