Barcelona teenager Dani Rodriguez made his long-awaited first-team debut against Real Valladolid, but it ended in heartbreak.
After just 38 minutes on the pitch, the young midfielder had to come off due to a painful shoulder injury, cutting short what should have been a proud night for the homegrown talent.
Rodriguez, promoted from Barça Atletic, was eager to impress. Despite battling several injuries all season with the reserves, he finally got his chance under Hansi Flick.
And in those opening minutes, the 19-year-old showed effort and intent, constantly pushing forward and trying to make an impact — something that clearly pleased his manager.
However, during one attacking move, he lost his balance while duelling with Valladolid’s Adam Aznou. As he reached out with his arm, his shoulder popped out.
He immediately dropped to the ground, signalling for help. Medical staff rushed on and tried to assist him, but it was soon clear he couldn’t continue. He walked off the pitch with his arm heavily bandaged, clearly in pain.
Despite the injury, the Valladolid crowd at Jose Zorrilla gave him a warm round of applause as he left the field — a touching show of respect for a young player who was clearly devastated.
After the game, Barcelona confirmed the bad news: “Barça Atletic’s Dani Rodriguez has suffered an acute dislocation in his right shoulder during the #ValladolidBarça match.”
The statement also said that the youngster would return to Barcelona for further tests and would not travel with the reserves to Lugo for their upcoming league match.
This latest injury adds to a frustrating season for Rodriguez. The midfielder has already missed 24 matches due to two thigh injuries and has only managed to feature in 10 games for Barça Atletic all season.
Right now, it is still unclear how long Dani will be sidelined or whether he will feature again before the season ends.
However, with a full recovery, he is expected to be part of the senior squad in pre-season and have more chances under Flick next campaign.
