Boro were in the fight for promotion right from the very start of the campaign, and they even managed to steady themselves after the departure of manager Rob Edwards to Wolverhampton Wanderers in November.

Edwards’ successor, former Hammarby coach Kim Hellberg, has got the Smoggies to continue their pursuit of a top two finish in the Championship, and he has perhaps got Middlesbrough playing the best football that they have displayed in years.

There have been a few frustrating seasons since ‘Boro were last in the Premier League about a decade ago, including their play-off semi-final defeat to Coventry City in 2023 under Michael Carrick.

This time around, it looks as though they can go a couple of steps better than that, though, and so FLW has looked at the millions that they are working with, with Gibson, as they attempt to push into the Premier League.

Middlesbrough-born Steve Gibson has been involved with Middlesbrough for over 40 years, with the lifelong supporter becoming a director at the club at the age of 26.

In 1993, when 35-years-old, he bought out the shares of brewing company Scottish & Newcastle before succeeding Colin Henderson as chairman and taking his ownership of the club to over 90%.

Gibson had made his money by founding Bulkhaul Limited, which is a haulage company for liquids, powders and gases and is still going to this day with offices and operations worldwide.

In May 2024, in the Sunday Times Rich List, which covers the 1,000 wealthiest people in the United Kingdom, Gibson was listed at 350th with an estimated net worth of £640 million.

Middlesbrough have been very successful with Steve Gibson

As the fortunes of the Premier League continue to grow, Steve Gibson’s worth will still be worthy of promise and potential in England’s top-flight, especially with the riches that come with it.

Prior to the boom of the early-2010’s, when the Premier League TV deal skyrocketed, Middlesbrough were a stalwart of the Premier League and actually a bit of a force.

Having nearly folded back in 1986, ‘Boro went on to still win their only major honour with the 2004 League Cup triumph against Bolton during the period in which Gibson has owned the club.

As well as that, he oversaw his beloved club reach the FA Cup final in 1997, the same year as reaching the League Cup final and the year before yet another League Cup final.

Under the management of Steve McClaren, they were also UEFA Cup runners’ up in 2006, losing to Sevilla in Eindhoven after a dramatic couple of comebacks against Basel and Steaua Bucharest.

Memories have already been forged with Gibson but more appear still yet to made. ‘Boro have been extremely successful under the ownership of Gibson and another return to the top-flight will yet again be financed by the impressive millions of their benefactor.
