Real Madrid will be travelling to Qatar to take on CF Pachuca of Mexico in the final of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup on Wednesday.

The tournament has actually been underway since September, as the African and Asia-Pacific representatives entered the competition at an early stage.

But what is the Intercontinental Cup? Many football fans will recognise the tournament as what was formerly called the Club World Cup, which sees the winners of each continent’s top club competition take on each other.

The most recent edition of this competition was in December last year, as Manchester City beat Brazilian side Fluminense in the final in Saudi Arabia.

The FIFA Intercontinental Cup is a rebranding of that previous competition, given the revamped, 32-team FIFA Club World Cup which will take place in the United States this summer.

That tournament, the Club World Cup, will not take place every year, but rather every four years, similar to the World Cup contested between national teams.

Hopefully that clears things up, but all we need to know for now is that Real Madrid will be taking on CONCACAF Champions Cup winners CF Pachuca on Thursday.
