What is the Women’s Finalissima?

The Women’s Finalissima is an intercontinental match between the winners of the most recent European and South American championships.

They play for a trophy which was first won by Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses back in 2023.

England will be able to defend the trophy after they won the Women’s Euros with a penalty shootout win over Spain.

The Lionesses came from behind against Spain to take the game to extra-time and penalties.

Hannah Hampton made vital saves from Aitana Bonmati and Mariona Caldentey, before Chloe Kelly scored the winning penalty.

Kelly is now the favourite to win the Sports Personality of the Year, with UK betting sites giving her odds of 10/11 to win the prestigious trophy.

The Lionesses will face Brazil, who are fresh off winning the Copa America Femenina on penalties over Colombia.

What happened in the last Finalissima?

The next Women’s Finalissima will be a rematch from the first game for the trophy between England and Brazil from 2023.

England played almost the same starting XI on that day as they did against Spain in the Euro 2025 final, except Mary Earps was in goal instead of Hannah Hampton.

Ella Toone put England ahead after 23 minutes though Andressa scored in the third-minute of stoppage time to send the game to extra-time and then penalties.

Just like they did against Spain, England would win on penalties with Chloe Kelly scoring the winning spot-kick.

Georgia Stanway, Rachel Daly and Alex Greenwood also scored during the 4-3 shootout win, with only Toone failing to score from the spot.

How did Brazil win the 2025 Copa America Femenina?

Brazil beat Colombia in a dramatic penalty shootout to win the 2025 Copa America Femenina.

Going into this year’s edition of the tournament, Brazil had won the trophy on eight out of the nine times it had been contested.

However, Colombia looked like they would end Brazil’s 19-year stranglehold of the competition, after taking a 2-0 lead in the final.

Brazil pulled back to 2-2, only for Chelsea’s Mayra Ramirez to score an 88th-minute apparent winner for Colombia.

That was until Marta scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time to send the game to extra-time.

After extra-time finished 4-4, Brazil would go on to win 5-4 on penalties after goalkeeper Lorena saved from Jorelyn Carabali to seal the victory.

When will the next Women’s Finalissima take place?

A date has not yet been set for the Women’s Finalissima.

However, England won the inaugural trophy in April 2023 during their penalty shootout win over Brazil.

So while confirmation still needs to be made, a similar timeframe can be expected for next year’s match.
