Sheffield Wednesday have officially been relegated to League One

Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation to League One was officially confirmed on Sunday following a 2-1 loss to bitter rivals Sheffield United.

Henrik Pedersen’s side needed a win to postpone the inevitable, but were unable to overcome first half goals from Patrick Bamford and Harrison Burrows.

A red card for Kalvin Phillips in the 49th minute was quickly met with Charlie McNeill’s strike to pull one back for the Owls, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 10th loss in a row in the league.

The Yorkshire outfit will now be trying to plan for life in League One, but they are still waiting for ratification from the EFL to complete the takeover of the club.

Sheffield Wednesday have been in administration since October, and a preferred bidder was named in December, but approval has not yet been granted by the league to finalise the deal.

This has left Begbies Traynor in charge of the day-to-day running of the team in the meantime, while the consortium led by James Bord waits for a final decision.

Josh Windass urges Sheffield Wednesday owners to back Henrik Pedersen

Josh Windass has reflected on his former club’s relegation by suggesting that Pedersen is the man to lead the team forward into League One.

He believes that the Danish coach should be backed by the Owls’ next owners, and that he should be allowed to rebuild the team in order to fight for promotion back to the Championship straight away next season.

“Obviously they’re in a difficult moment,” said Windass, via Sky Sports.

“Hopefully they can get a takeover and give Henrik the chance he deserves next year to rebuild the team and come back up.”

Windass spent two seasons working with Pedersen, who was assistant coach to Danny Rohl prior to taking over as manager last summer.

The forward departed at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, terminating his contract due to wages not being paid on time on multiple occasions, joining Wrexham.

He was one of several departures that left Sheffield Wednesday with an inexperienced squad for the fight to survive in the second tier this term.

Pedersen has overseen one win in 37 games since taking charge at Hillsborough last summer, and it remains to be seen whether he will be kept on as head coach once the new owners are in place.

Sheffield Wednesday are stuck on minus seven points at the bottom of the Championship table, with the club receiving 18 points worth of deduction penalties from the EFL this campaign.

New Sheffield Wednesday owners may want clean slate next season

Pedersen has been a sitting duck at Hillsborough this year, and there’s not much more anybody could’ve done in his position given the club’s lack of resources.

The squad has been quite thin, with injuries only making matters worse, and it’s really no surprise that results have been as poor as they have.

But the new owners may want to give the team a fresh start under a new coach next season, regardless of his popularity in the dressing room.

Pedersen has done an admirable job for Sheffield Wednesday this campaign, but Bord will have his own plans for what next for the club and they may not involve the Dane.
