Huddersfield Town owner Kevin Nagle made his intentions clear when he first took over the Terriers
Kevin Nagle took full ownership of Huddersfield Town in June 2023, but his two years in West Yorkshire haven't exactly gone to plan so far.
The 70-year-old brought an end to Dean Hoyle’s long spell as owner (either side of the few years of Phil Hodgkinson), and it was a period which saw the Terriers reach the Premier League.
Huddersfield haven’t managed to reach the same heights since suffering relegation from the top-flight in 2019. Town were relegated once more at the end of Nagle’s first season as owner.
The Yorkshire outfit dismissed Neil Warnock and Darren Moore throughout that campaign before former Schalke boss Andre Breitenreiter was tasked with keeping them in the second-tier.
That wasn’t to be though, and the season that followed didn’t present anything to write home about either.
Michael Duff led the Terriers into battle last term and looked to be in the play-off mix come January, but a lack of investment over the winter saw them fade away from the top six fight.
Duff was ultimately sacked and Jon Worthington then oversaw a six-match losing streak to finish the campaign, with Town ultimately finishing 10th in the third tier of English football.
Two seasons of shortcomings have led to natural frustration from the Terriers’ faithful, who have begun to question their owner’s intentions.
When Nagle first took over the club, he instantly outlined his desire not to disappoint the fans at the John Smith’s Stadium.
“I am extremely humbled and excited to be the new steward of Huddersfield Town,” stated Nagle to the club’s website.
“I would like to thank Dean Hoyle, Dave Baldwin, the EFL, and FCA for all their help and attention to detail over the past few months.
“A special thanks to the wonderful Town supporters who have also been so supportive and patient. I know how deeply they care for this club, and I do not intend to let them down.
“Now let’s get to work.”
With a relegation under his belt in his first season as Town owner though, Nagle was part of the disappointing feeling in 2023-24 at the John Smith's Stadium, although when it's all said and done, it is the players on the pitch that are the ones with the responsibility to get things done.
Lee Grant has now been selected as the man to take Huddersfield forward next term and momentum is already building about the side’s chances to compete towards the top of League One.
The Terriers have acquired Ryan Ledson, Sean Roughan, Marcus Harness, Murray Wallace, Joe Low, Josh Feeney, and with a few more additions could enter the season as one of the favourites to secure play-off football.
Nagle’s time as Huddersfield owner hasn’t seen too many enjoyable moments so far, but the 2025/26 campaign may involve better times for the 70-year-old.
If Grant can utilise his new signings and turn the Terriers into a dangerous outfit, it would go a long way to rectifying Nagle’s reputation with the Town faithful.
