What Lewis Hall’s extension means for Man Utd as release clause speculation now clarified | OneFootball

Newcastle United have confirmed this morning that Lewis Hall has signed a two-year extension, keeping him tied to the club until 2031.

The 22-year-old was already contracted to St. James’ Park until 2029, but he has now committed his long-term future to Newcastle by signing until 2031.

It comes as a major blow to Manchester United, who had made their interest in Hall clear since before the summer.

Newcastle were already firm in their stance that he was not for sale, and that only intensified after they begrudgingly sanctioned the exits of Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.

Keeping Hall was then imperative in order to give Eddie Howe’s successor, Matthias Jaissle, the best possible chance of succeeding in his maiden term.

Jaissle is said to be hugely impressed by what he’s seen of the full-back since taking the reins, which is shown by the fact he’s started and played the full 90 minutes in all three Premier League matches thus far.

Alas, United’s chances of signing Hall next year have taken an enormous hit.

The Old Trafford faithful were hoping that a release clause would’ve been added into the Englishman’s terms, so that a potential transfer at the end of the campaign would’ve been straightforward.

However, Newcastle have opted against inserting one, with The Athletic stating: “While United may renew their interest in Hall next summer, Newcastle will be in a strong position to either reject any offers, or at the very least demand a higher fee.”

It remains to be seen if INEOS chiefs will be deterred by the developments, given they had identified Hall as the ideal replacement for Luke Shaw, who’s out of contract in M16 next June.
