Ole Werner had just guided RB Leipzig back into the UEFA Champions League for the upcoming campaign but securing a return to European football in his first season in charge wasn’t enough to guarantee his job safety. On Wednesday, the Saxony club announced that they had parted ways with their head coach.
“We were involved in the decision making process and analysed the season,” explained Jürgen Klopp, Head of Soccer at Red Bull. “Ole did a fantastic job; we qualified for the Champions League but we also have to look ahead at the same time.
“When we considered what the workload might look like for us, Leipzig decided to make a change,” Klopp told MagentaTV. “Ole was released and a new coach will be announced soon.”
That new coach is expected to be Martín Demichelis, currently of Mallorca. According to Sky Germany, Leipzig and the Argentine are in final negotiations over a contract until June 2028. Once an agreement is found, the Bundesliga club will activate the coach’s reported €2.5m exit clause.
