Sheffield United are thought to be keen on former player Oli McBurnie, who is available on a free transfer this summer.
Sheffield United are among a host of clubs interested in Oli McBurnie after it was revealed he would be leaving Las Palmas on a free transfer.
The Scotland international joined the Spanish outfit after five years at Bramall Lane, and whilst there were some good moments for McBurnie with Las Palmas, it ultimately ended in disappointment as they were relegated from the top-flight.
As a result, McBurnie had a clause in his contract which allows him to depart on a free, and it has been claimed that the Blades, Hull, Swansea and Celta Vigo
After their heartbreaking play-off final defeat to Sunderland, Sheffield United are gearing up for another year in the Championship, with Chris Wilder ready to reshape the squad.
Of course, failure to go up will have financial implications, and Wilder - should he remain in charge - is unlikely to have a massive budget this summer.
Therefore, the club will be sure to monitor free agents, which makes McBurnie an attractive option, even if he is in a position to command a decent salary.
Yet, estimates by Capology indicate that the striker may be within the Blades’ reach, as they believe he was on a weekly wage of £29,624 during his final season in Yorkshire.
Whilst that jumped to £40,000 with Las Palmas, McBurnie’s wages will have dropped following their relegation.
Again, we must stress that these figures are estimates, but if the ex-Swansea man was willing to accept a deal like his previous one, the near £30,000 a week would put him on a par with the top earners at Sheffield United.
Capology estimates that Anel Ahmedhodzic, Gus Hamer and Vini Souza are among the permanent players to be on those figures each week at Bramall Lane.
Some will debate whether McBurnie warrants a contract that would put him among the top earners, as he wasn’t exactly prolific in his first spell with the Blades, whilst he managed just three goals in La Liga.
However, with no transfer fee, McBurnie will be able to command a bigger wage, as the overall package will still make him relatively cheap compared to buying someone from another club.
Ultimately, Sheffield United are set for a tough summer, and recruitment will be key if they are to be in the mix for promotion next season.
