What On Earth Are Rangers Playing At In The Transfer Market?

The Give Him a Chance FFS Brigade are out in force this morning after Rangers confirmed the signing last night of Peterborough’s Emmanuel Hernandez. This is a signing that we are in disbelief over.

We originally broke Rangers’ interest in the lad around about a week or two ago and we emphasised the fact this was low ambition because he had a market value of barely £300,000. In fact, his market value was closer to around £200,000. Aged 23, not rated by his current side, and Rangers were interested. We could not quite fathom this one.

We should also emphasise the fact that this was League One, so a low-level League One player whose fans did not even rate him. And somehow Peterborough’s Barry Fry, that is the chairman, has managed to secure a £3.5 million windfall from Rangers for this lad. We are in disbelief on Ibrox Noise.

Naturally, our dubiety and scepticism of this was greeted by the usual give him a chance and why are you so negative crowds. And we do get that a number of people want to be positive, but it is very hard to be positive when we are signing League One duds that are probably worse than the crap that we already have.

This is £3.5 million pounds reported by Sky. That is a pretty reliable source to get information from, and while Rangers themselves never ever report fees, it is easy enough for the media such as Sky sources to get the information from the selling club and middlemen. That is not a tough one.

So yes, almost £4 million pounds for this kid. We are hearing, screaming and smelling Ben Davies Mark 2 here. Liverpool were laughing all the way to the bank with that £4 million that Rangers shelled out on him. We are unlikely to make that amount again even if Birmingham want him.

Hernandez, yes you could argue give him a chance and all that, but if he was not good enough for a League One team who were not even at the top of League One, how on earth is this 23-year-old going to cope with the colossal demands of Rangers?

The FC Twente captain Robin Propper could not cope with Rangers and he was 30. He had played at the high level of Dutch football, the top flight Eredivisie, and they had finished third in the Champions League slots. He was abysmal and has been atrocious at Rangers, and he is from a much better stable than Hernandez.

Now it is true a player situation is unique. A £300,000 dud-looking player can turn out to be a remarkable signing, while a £10 million Premier League player could turn out to be a terrible signing. We do accept the aspect of gamble and risk, but you can reduce those gambles and risks by improving the calibre that you are bringing in.

Walter Smith knew how to do it, but no manager since him really has, apart from in passing Steven Gerrard. But overall, this is not a good signing and we are not shy about saying it.

We will once again put our hands up to being wildly wrong if a miracle happens and this guy turns out to be the ghost of Maldini, but as it stands it is an astonishing waste of what little money Rangers have and seems to sum up the Russell Martin era pretty perfectly if you ask us.

And yes, this article is negative. We cannot really spin this one positively other than give him a chance. We are really quite tired of that patter, to be honest.
