Don Goodman predicted Birmingham City would move for Patrick Roberts on a permanent deal
Patrick Roberts has provided Birmingham City with a creative spark in his short time at the club.
The 28-year-old was a mainstay in the Sunderland side who got promoted last season, mainly due in part to his contributions from the bench in the play-off final, where he set up Eliezer Mayenda's equaliser in the Black Cats' 2-1 win over Sheffield United.
Unfortunately, after Regis le Bris' side improved over the summer, Roberts was expendable and was free to go out on loan to Birmingham for the season, where he netted his first of the season away at Wrexham to go alongside an assist in the Blues' 1-0 win over Swansea City.
At Championship level, there aren't many more game-changing wingers than the former Manchester City academy graduate, and EFL pundit Don Goodman stated in an exclusive interview with Football League World that he felt Chris Davies' side should explore a permanent deal.
He stated that it "ultimately would come down to how much the deal would cost." So, how much would Birmingham have to pay Sunderland to bring the 28-year-old in permanently?
According to Transfermarkt, Patrick Roberts is currently valued at €5 million, or £4.36 million.
The winger currently has less than one year left on his current Sunderland deal, although the Black Cats do have the option to trigger a one-year extension at the end of this season.
You'd expect that the option would be exercised to stop Sunderland from losing Roberts on a free, and then Regis le Bris' side may look to sell permanently if they remain in the Premier League.
Therefore, next summer will see a lot of interest forming around the wideman, and then it will all be down to how much Birmingham values the 28-year-old, as they have shown that they're not afraid to splash the cash to help get themselves up the leagues.
Whilst there's no denying that Roberts is a top-level Championship operator out wide, questions can be asked about whether he's a Premier League-level winger. Sunderland have felt that they have better options, hence why he's been allowed to move on loan.
If Birmingham does spend a few million pounds to bring him in, and it does result in promotion, then they'd arguably be in the same position as Sunderland are now, just with an older Roberts under a longer contract.
If Roberts can help them to promotion whilst on loan, then that would be the perfect scenario, as Birmingham could send him back to the Stadium of Light and then focus on strengthening in the Premier League. However, their season hasn't gotten off to the best of starts, and promotion seems more of a tall task than it was in August.
So, if the Blues have their sights set on Premier League promotion in the coming seasons, they'll be wanting to make their side as top-flight ready as possible whilst they're still in the Championship, and they may want to steer clear of a permanent deal for Roberts at that time.
But, if any other side feels they can make that step up into the play-offs from the mid-table, and has a few million quid they can throw at Sunderland next summer, there won't be more dependable players than the 28-year-old.
