The match between Getafe and Real Madrid was temporarily halted in the 80th minute due to disturbing chants from the stands directed at Dani Ceballos.

As the Real Madrid midfielder was preparing to enter the pitch in place of Arda Giler, a section of the Getafe fans began chanting “Ceballos, die.”

The situation quickly escalated, prompting both the referee and stadium security to intervene, activating the usual protocol for handling such incidents.

Why did it happen?

To put things in order, the root of the incident goes back almost a decade to 2016, during Ceballos’s time at Betis.

In a La Liga encounter between Betis and Getafe at the Benito Villamarin, Ceballos reportedly exchanged heated words with Getafe’s defender Cala, as well as a member of the club’s coaching staff.

According to a report from SPORT, Ceballos allegedly told them, “Let’s see if you rot in the Second Division and disappear,” which ignited a confrontation that required intervention to calm down.

The tension from that incident appears to have resurfaced, with fans still holding a grudge against the player.

Repercussions of the event

The referee immediately took note of the chants, and the match was temporarily halted as both benches and security were alerted to the situation.

“In the 78th minute, the match was stopped to apply the verbal violence protocol, at the request of the Real Madrid players, due to chants coming from a section of the stands, located in the south zone of the stadium,” read the referee’s post-match report.

“The chants that could be heard were: “Ceballos, die” “Ceballos, die” The match was stopped for one minute until the announcement was made over the PA system to stop the chants, which they did.”

Looking ahead, there are potential repercussions for Getafe. The Disciplinary Committee could impose a fine on the club as early as next week, depending on their investigation.

If such behaviour persists, the possibility of stadium closure warnings could follow.

Additionally, based on a formal complaint from Ceballos’s employers, an extraordinary procedure could be initiated by the disciplinary body, leading to further sanctions.
